I
We were very pleased to have Fin Swimming return to the competition this year and thank West Coast for taking on the mammoth task to co-ordinate and host.
The event was held at the Strand Municipal Pool on the evening preceding Junior Nationals.
The Best Fin Swimmer Trophies in the respective categories went to Louis Swanevelder of Western Province and Robyn Steyn from West Coast. Congratulations to both these swimmer on this outstanding achievement.
Junior Nationals 2022 was hosted by Tridents / Western Province at Generations Aquatic Centre, and with Covid restrictions reduced, the tournament was once again open to all categories.
Age groups included in this year’s tournament were U19, U15, U13 and U10. With 262 players from 8 provinces, and 30 teams, it was a jam-packed tournament held over three days.
The U19 men’s league was exhilarating; an equal point score for the 1st and 2nd place resulted in a coin toss, the first time ever to happen in South Africa. The coin toss was between Gauteng North and Western Province, with Gauteng North winning the toss and going into 1st place to play the 4th team, Gauteng; Western Province played the 3rd ranked team, Boland.
The final was between Gauteng North, Coached by Ters Joubert and Western Province, Coached by Cameron Stephen. With 1 all at the end of the normal time, the game then went into extra time. With no goals being scored in the extra time, the game then went into sudden death or golden goal. Western Province, with guts and determination and a very demonstrative Coach, managed to score the winning goal.
Thank you to all the coaches, referees, parents, and volunteers who without your involvement a competition of this nature would not be possible.
Your continued support of this breath-taking sport is much appreciated.
